A couple of hours later, US President Donald Trump announced on the social media platform Truth that Nicolás Maduro and his wife had been captured and taken out of the country, promising to provide details at a press conference today.

A little later, Utah Senator Mike Lee reported on X social media that he had spoken by phone with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who said the attacks were cover for the execution of an arrest warrant for Nicolás Maduro. He later added that Rubio does not expect further action in Venezuela.

The Cartel of the Suns is an umbrella term used to describe alleged criminal networks within the Venezuelan Armed Forces, including high-ranking officers and political figures involved in the international drug trade.

On December 28, protests began in Tehran’s and Iran’s main marketplace, the Bazaar, and quickly spread to other parts of the city. The protests were triggered by accelerating inflation and dissatisfaction with the country’s governance. Between December 28 and January 1, the human rights organization HANA recorded at least 148 arrests, at least seven deaths, and at least 33 injuries. Authorities used water cannons, tear gas, and, in some cases, live ammunition.

On January 3, Iranian regime leader Ali Khamenei commented on the protests for the first time, saying they are talking to the protesters, but that the rioters needed to be put in their place. He also blamed the “enemy” for the collapse of the Iranian rial.
