On May 22, Meduza published excerpts from a New York Times article detailing how Russia used Brazil and other Latin American countries to create cover identities for its intelligence agents. The goal wasn’t to spy on Brazil, but to become Brazilian. In 2022, Brazilian counterintelligence, with support from foreign partners, began tracking them down. They identified nine spies but managed to arrest only two—the rest escaped.

On May 22, The Moscow Times, citing Russia’s Ministry of Agriculture, reported that “last year’s vegetable harvest has almost run out.” Imported goods are now filling the shelves, causing a sharp rise in prices. Frosts, droughts, and declining yields are named as key factors in the bad harvest.
