On this day in 1580, the greatest Portuguese poet, Luís de Camões, passed away. He chronicled the history of Portugal and Portuguese navigators in Os Lusíadas epic about Vasco da Gama’s journey to India.

Portugal is nearly nine centuries old. On October 5, 1143, King Alfonso VII of León and Castile officially recognized the independence of the kingdom founded by Dom Afonso Henriques. As it was required that time, the agreement between the two monarchs was confirmed by the papal bull “Manifestis Probatum”, issued on May 23, 1179.

On June 11, the Associated Press reported that Iranian authorities had executed Abbas Kourkouri, detained during the 2022 “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests. He was accused of being part of a Revolutionary Guard volunteer unit involved in a shootout in Izeh, where seven people died. Human rights groups believe Abbas was an innocent protester executed without a fair trial. The mother of nine-year-old Kian, who died in the incident, said: “When we were driving home, officers opened fire on our car.”

Although Masoud Pezeshkian who became a president, promised during his campaign to end the harassment of women by the morality police, the Iranian government has begun using drones to monitor women who appear in public without headscarves.

The filming complex at Odesa Film Studio — known to many of us since childhood — was partially destroyed. Films such as Vertical, Mysterious Island, and Spring on Zarechnaya Street were shot there.
