Roblox gaming platform blocked. Saint Nicholas Day and Ukrainian Armed Forces Day.

You're watching news from the weekly rally in front of the Russian Embassy in Lisbon. Today is December 6, 2:30 PM.

On December 3rd, Roskomnadzor blocked the American gaming platform Roblox, joining countries such as China, Türkiye, and Iraq. On the platform, users create games themselves using a programming language that even a child can master—much like YouTube content is created by bloggers. Russian authorities have accused Roblox of inciting violence, justifying terrorism, and containing LGBT content. Internationally, however, the platform is being criticized not for these reasons but for concerns about child safety.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications, and Mass Media continues to set up “whitelists,” claiming they are only for mobile internet access during drone attacks. On December 5th, one real-estate service and one online cinema were added—along with the website for the remote voting (and vote-rigging), the websites of government agencies, state-controlled media outlets, and several others.

It is said that the included services are chosen based on popularity. Of course, blocked platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Discord, Viber, Signal, Snapchat, SoundCloud, and Roblox are “less popular.” The list of blocked resources already contains 976 thousands websites. Interestingly, blocking orders are issued not only by Roskomnadzor, but also by the Federal Tax Service. Why would that be?

Today, Portugal celebrates the day of Saint Nicholas of Myra in churches where he is considered the patron saint. He was born in the 3rd century and used his inheritance to help the needy, the poor, and the sick. One night, Nicholas slipped into the home of a family whose father could not marry off his daughters because he could not provide a suitable dowry. Nicholas threw a bag of coins through an open window and fled. With this money, the father was able to marry off his eldest daughter. In the Netherlands and Germany, Saint Nicholas is “Sint Nicolaas,” and colloquially “Sinterklaas”—which is where “Santa Claus” came from.

Today is also the last day of Nicolinas festivities in Guimarães. This is one of the two oldest academic traditions in Portugal, dating back to 1664. The festival is held from November 29 to December 6 in honor of Saint Nicholas, who is also considered the patron saint of students, in memory of his resurrection of three students. It’s a celebration with touches of classicism, romanticism, and the joyful spirit of youth.

Today is also the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. While geopolitical games continue, Ukrainians—as well as Russians, Belarusians, Portuguese, and citizens of other countries serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, many of whom never intended to serve in the military—continue to shield civilians. Let’s wish all military personnel to return home alive.
