Shadow fleet is spying. The war continues. An operation against scam centers in Thailand.

You’re watching news from the weekly rally in front of the Russian Embassy in Lisbon. Today is July 4th, 2:30 PM.

On July 2, the International Institute for Strategic Studies published a report saying Russia may have launched surveillance drones from "shadow fleet" tankers over military and nuclear sites in 13 European countries from August 2024 to February 2026, including sites housing U.S. B61 bombs and France's Île Longue submarine base. The finding is based on Russian vessels being nearby when the drones were spotted. The report notes that the EU's flagship counter-drone program, EDDI, will be able to intercept drones only once they are already in the air over Europe; its mandate does not extend to a launch ship in international waters.

On June 3, Fox News, citing a statement from Meta, reported that Meta, working with the U.S. Department of Justice, the FBI and Thai police, and with support from Microsoft, Coinbase and Starlink, carried out a two-week operation against scam centers in Southeast Asia. The scammers conned people out of money through fake romances, bogus cryptocurrency investments and other schemes. They also used "pig-butchering," a method in which victims are "fattened up" over time as scammers win their trust and let them make money before fleecing them. In the operation, Thai police arrested 63 people, and the platforms removed about 1.4 million accounts.
