Anti-war stance on fake election. Paying taxes to Russia's detriment. Bacteria with personality.

You’re watching news from the weekly rally in front of the Russian Embassy in Lisbon. Today is August 15th, 2:30 PM.

On August 10, Russia's Supreme Court removed Yabloko's federal list from the State Duma election. Yabloko was the only party that had declared an anti-war stance. The ruling cited donations from Russians who had received money from abroad, posts by others supporting the party on blocked social networks and "copyright violations."

Three days earlier, Rodina party leader Alexei Zhuravlev had sued to cancel the registration of Yabloko's list.

For years, Yabloko had tried not to give the authorities a pretext. When Yulia Navalnaya and other Russians who had left the country urged people to vote for Yabloko, the party said such support "could lead to its removal" from the election. Even that did not help.

Anton Mikhalchuk, who has been labeled a "foreign agent," sent 1,100 rubles to the author of the denunciation, saying Rodina should be removed from the election under the same logic.

Meanwhile in Pskov, prosecutors asked a court to sentence Yabloko deputy chairman Lev Shlosberg to 12 years and one month in a penal colony for reposting an Echo of Moscow item featuring a Daily Mirror cover and for a debate in which he called for a swift ceasefire.

On August 11, the University of Porto's Institute for Research and Innovation in Health reported on a joint study by scientists at the University of Porto and the University of Oxford into links between gut and oral bacteria and tendencies toward impulsivity, manipulativeness and lack of empathy. Researchers used psychological scales to assess 200 Portuguese adults for traits such as empathy and anxiety, while also analyzing biological samples.

Specific gut and oral bacteria, along with elevated glucose and taurine in the samples, were associated with higher levels of the studied traits. The authors emphasize that this is the first study linking bacteria and psychopathy, and that it does not prove cause-and-effect relationship. But they say the findings could help develop mental health markers and treatments based on nutrition and probiotics.
