On September 20, the human rights agency HRANA reported that 23-year-old student Najmeh Amini said in an audio message from a prison in Mashhad that she had been sentenced to death on September 16. She asked the U.N. and human rights defenders to review her case and ensure her right to a fair trial. She was tried on charges of "assembly and collusion against national security" and "insulting sacred beliefs and the Imams."

It was first held in 2007 at the Solovetsky Stone in Moscow to mark the 70th anniversary of the Great Terror. In 2025, the names were read in 150 cities and 50 countries.
