Venezuelans Determined to Bring About Change. Asylum Denied in Croatia Because of Anti-War Video.

You are watching the news from the weekly rally at the Russian Embassy in Lisbon. Today is July 27, 2:30 PM.

In April, we reported that the Venezuelan authorities are preventing citizens who have left the country and who are clearly against the regime from voting in the upcoming elections in Venezuela.

On July 4, CNN World published an article reporting that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro promised to hold fair elections in October 2023 after negotiations with the US State Department.

Later, opposition candidates Maria Corina Machado and her replacement Corina Yoris were banned from participating in the elections. Now another opposition candidate, Edmundo González, is running, with polls showing a lead of more than twenty percentage points over Maduro.

Opposition protests in Venezuela have been repeatedly suppressed, there are hundreds of political prisoners, and 7 million people have left the country in the last 10 years. Some countries are trying to limit migration by stopping issuing documents and building fences. However, many Venezuelans who have left dream of returning home if the opposition comes to power.

Venezuelans are determined to bring about change. They are holding their rally at 7 PM on July 28th in Lisbon's Restauradores Square. We support them, including because it is necessary to destroy the alliance of dictators who support Putin in the war in Ukraine.

Alarming events are taking place in Croatia. Vladislav Arinichev, an anti-war activist from Russia, has been in a deportation prison in Croatia for over a week under threat of deportation and subsequent ban on entry into the European Union.

In Russia, Vladislav spoke out against the war with Ukraine and recorded an anti-war video, because of which a criminal case was opened against him under the article "Justification of terrorism", he was arrested in absentia and added to the list of terrorists and extremists. This became one of the reasons for the denial of political asylum in Croatia.

And this is not the first time that Croatian authorities have used lists of dictatorial regimes to persecute activists. In 2022, Croatian police detained a member of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot, accused on a trumped-up case because of her father, who supported the opposition.

As a protest against such justifications for denial of international protection, as well as against the unfair, from Vladislav's point of view, numerous refusals to other refugees, Vladislav went to a picket in the center of Zagreb. The obscene inscription on Vladislav's T-shirt addressed to the Croatian security service, which deals with deportations, did draw attention to the problem, but it was offensive. Vladislav was arrested, served administrative arrest and then transferred to a deportation prison. It is possible that the deportation will be to Russia.

We are grateful to the human rights activists working on his case, and we call on the media to publicize this case, and the Russian opposition to use their resources to help Vladislav.
