On June 20, 30-year-old volunteer Nadezhda Rossinskaya, known as Nadin Geisler, was sentenced to 22 years in prison for treason and aiding terrorism. At the start of the full-scale war, the volunteer group "Beauty Army," which she founded, actively supported Ukrainian refugees in the occupied territories of Ukraine and in Belgorod. They provided monthly supplies of food and hygiene items, clothing, medical consultations, hospital medicine, animal feed, and assistance with evacuation. These are responsibilities that should fall to the occupying state—but even members of the Belgorod Red Cross, which is state-funded, ended up relying on them.
"My desire to help comes from valuing these people and their lives, and the fact that they are suffering unjustly," Nadezhda said in her final statement in court. The case was held partly behind closed doors, so information is scarce. The evidence reportedly includes the testimony of her sister—who was taken from a psychiatric hospital—a livestream from Ukraine that no one has seen, and posts in social media that Nadezhda denies owning.
