June 10 is the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities. The date marks the anniversary of the death of Luís de Camões, author of "The Lusiads" and a symbol of the Portuguese language. The holiday also recognizes Portuguese communities abroad that preserve the language, traditions and cultural ties to Portugal.

Portugal may be the only country that celebrates its national day not in memory of a battle or a warrior hero, but in honor of a poet. In a written message sent to the Portuguese diaspora, President António José Seguro noted that Luís de Camões wrote "The Lusiads" while away from Portugal.

The "You Are Not Alone" solidarity marathon for political prisoners continues, bringing together numerous media outlets, public figures and politicians. The goal is to raise €145,000 to help families visit their loved ones, send them packages in prison and deposit money in their prison accounts.
