No dia 17 de janeiro, a edição online do jornal "The Insider" revelou a opinião de Viktor Danilov-Danilyan, chefe científico do Instituto de Problemas da Água da Academia Russa de Ciências, sobre as consequências do acidente de dois petroleiros no Mar Negro. Segundo ele, não era suposto utilizar navios que deveriam ter sido desactivados há 20 anos e que é impossível evitar desastres se não mudar de atitude.
