On February 3, The Insider revealed that 134 American Desert Tech sniper rifles, registered in the Russian Federation, have surfaced since the onset of Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine. Despite EU and US bans on small arms exports since 2014, imports to Russia continue. These rifles can hit targets at a range of up to 3 kilometers, far exceeding the capability of Russian-made models, which max out at 1 kilometer.

On February 6, Novaya Gazeta Evropa reported on the latest appointment under Putin’s “time of heroes” initiative. Nursultan Mussagaleev, a participant in the war in Ukraine, has been named acting Deputy Minister for Regional and Information Policy in Russia’s Orenburg Region. According to Ukraine’s Security Service, Mussagaleev allegedly ordered the abduction, torture, and execution of a civilian during a military “cleansing” operation in the Bucha District. The man’s phone contained photos of construction materials, which reportedly prompted the attack.
