The ships’ guards resisted the attacks for two days, but with no assistance from the British fleet or the European "Aspides" mission—due to the absence of warships in the area—the crews were forced to abandon the vessels.

On July 8, Euronews reported—citing the German Foreign Ministry—that a Bundeswehr aircraft participating in the Aspides mission was struck by a Chinese laser system during a surveillance flight over the Red Sea. EU forces are conducting operations there to protect civilian shipping from Houthi attacks.
