5 years since Navalny’s poisoning. 5 years since the protests in Belarus. $50 million for Maduro.

You're watching news from the weekly rally in front of the Russian Embassy in Lisbon. Today is August 16, 2:30 PM.

On August 20, 2020, Alexei Navalny was poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok. After miraculously surviving, Alexei published a recording of his phone call with Konstantin Kudryavtsev, in which Kudryavtsev described details of the FSB operation to poison him.

The flight on which Alexei fell ill was en route from Tomsk to Moscow, but the pilots decided to land in Omsk—even after the airport announced it was “mined.” Airport medics and ambulance staff diagnosed toxic poisoning and took action.

Doctors at the Charité clinic, where Alexei was treated, wrote in the scientific journal The Lancet that artificial ventilation in the first hours after the poisoning was decisive.

In February 2025, the news portal t-online reported that German prosecutors charged the director of Riol-Chemie with supplying highly toxic substances to Russia through a network of intermediaries. Since September 2018, U.S. investigators have uncovered a network of companies used to conceal the true recipients of chemicals and equipment. The alleged final recipient is the Himmed group, which supplies laboratories for the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Himmed is under U.S. sanctions imposed over the poisoning of Alexei Navalny.

On August 9, 2020, following falsified presidential elections, the largest protests in the history of independent Belarus began. On the fifth anniversary, the media outlet Zerkalo cites quotes from statements by world politicians addressed to Belarusians. “Supporting a democratic Belarus is both a moral imperative and a strategic investment in Europe’s security,” says a statement by the head of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Marcos Perestrello.

On August 10, 2020, 34-year-old Alexander Taraikovsky was killed in Minsk. His death became one of the central symbols of the 2020 protest movement. The Nasha Niva notes that video recordings show an unarmed Taraikovsky walking toward the security forces with his hands raised, when one of them shoots him at close range.

On August 7, U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi announced on X a $50 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Nicolás Maduro. She stated that Maduro is one of the world’s largest drug traffickers and poses a threat to U.S. national security. The Drug Enforcement Administration has already seized 30 tons of cocaine linked to Maduro and his accomplices. Cocaine is often laced with fentanyl, which is highly addictive and often fatal.
