She was given the family name Besfamilnaya in an orphanage. Yevgeniya Mikhailovna did not speak Ukrainian—only Yiddish and Russian. On the night of January 13, in freezing temperatures, pipes burst in her apartment, and the building began flooding. Neighbors and a volunteer who was bringing her groceries managed to force the door open, and she was found dead. Her body was frozen solid. Kyiv was left without power by Russian missiles.
